Komodo Island, one of Indonesia’s most breathtaking destinations, is home to the famous Komodo dragons, pristine beaches, and stunning marine life. If you are in Lombok and wish to explore this UNESCO-listed wonder, there are several ways to embark on an unforgettable journey. Here’s everything you need to know about the best Komodo Island tour from Lombok.
The journey from Lombok to Komodo Island typically involves multiple travel segments. Below are the most common ways to reach this stunning destination:
For adventurous travelers, a multi-day boat tour from Lombok to Komodo is the best way to experience the journey. These tours usually take 3 to 4 days and offer stops at beautiful islands like Moyo, Satonda, and Rinca before reaching Komodo Island. During the trip, you can enjoy snorkeling, diving, and witnessing incredible landscapes.
The fastest and most comfortable way to reach Komodo Island from Lombok is by taking a direct flight from Lombok International Airport (LOP) to Labuan Bajo (LBJ), the gateway to Komodo National Park. From Labuan Bajo, you can take a speedboat or join a guided tour to explore Komodo Island and its surroundings.
The 4 days 3 nights sailing route by boat from Lombok to Labuan Bajo in 2025 has become a top choice for travelers heading to Komodo National Park. In addition to visiting almost all the main destinations in Komodo National Park such as Loh Liang Komodo Park, Padar Island, Pink Beach, and many other destinations, sailing from Lombok offers an unforgettable experience for most visitors. Moreover, there are now many variations of boats available, ranging from standard, deluxe, to luxury. One of the highlights of this tour is visiting Saleh Bay in Sumbawa, where travelers are very enthusiastic about seeing this giant of the sea. However, some people do not like it because they consider it unnatural since the whale sharks are fed.
So, what exactly makes this trip so attractive? Below, I will explain in detail:
All boats sailing from Lombok start their journey from Kayangan Harbor in East Lombok. Since this harbor is quite far from many tourist areas in Lombok such as Kuta and the Gili Islands, most tour operators usually provide pick-up services directly from your accommodation, such as in Kuta Lombok, the Gili Islands, Bangsal, and Senggigi. Golden Island Cruises also offers pick-up from additional locations such as Tetebatu, Senaru, and Mataram. The pick-up service is usually included in the tour package ticket that you have purchased.
Pick-up starts in the morning between 8 AM and 10 AM, depending on the operator you choose. You will then be transferred by van to Kayangan Harbor. The journey usually takes around more than 3 hours, depending on the route taken, traffic conditions, and meeting point.
Important: Golden Island Cruises has two main meeting points, making the route more flexible to avoid traffic and eliminating the need to travel to a single meeting point that may sometimes be in the opposite direction of Kayangan Harbor. Guests from the Gili Islands, Bangsal, and Senggigi will be directed to the meeting point in Bangsal and will take the eastern Pemenang–Bayan highway route to avoid traffic. Meanwhile, guests staying in Kuta, Tetebatu, and Mataram will be directed to the meeting point in Kopang, Central Lombok, which is on the same route toward Kayangan.
This is important to reduce travel time to Kayangan. That is why our boat is usually the first to depart, due to the shorter overland travel time.
After arriving at Kayangan Harbor, the boats will begin their sailing adventure along Sumbawa Island.
Day 1: After boarding the boat, you will immediately sail toward Sumbawa Island. Around 4–5 PM, you will arrive at Kenawa Island, Sumbawa, which is the first stop. Here, you will disembark and hike up Kenawa Hill to enjoy the sunset. After sunset, you will return to the boat and continue your sailing journey.
Day 2:
You will arrive at Saleh Bay early in the morning around 6 AM. After breakfast, you will be invited to swim and snorkel with whale sharks here.
Note: For extreme animal lovers, it is recommended not to join this tour, as we have received many complaints from those who do not like seeing animals being fed. However, we have explained that these animals are protected by the government and that the area is part of a conservation zone.
After leaving Saleh Bay, you will continue sailing along the waters of Sumbawa. You will be treated to views of the blue sea surrounded by rolling hills. If you are lucky, dozens of dolphins may follow your boat as if welcoming your journey. It is truly an impressive experience.
At the end of the second day, the trip concludes with a stop at Tambora Sea, where guests are allowed to jump from the top of the boat and enjoy swimming in the blue waters of Sumbawa.
Important:
Please note that the second night is the most challenging part of this sailing trip. The boat will pass along Sumbawa Island toward Komodo National Park, specifically through Sanggar Bay, Sumbawa, at the border between Sumbawa Island and Komodo Island. The waves here are usually strong, hitting the boat from left to right or causing it to sway up and down. It is important for those who are prone to seasickness to prepare well by bringing seasickness medication and, if possible, getting some sleep to reduce discomfort. High waves usually occur between around 9 PM and 2 AM.
Day 3
Arrival at Komodo National Park. The third day is the most physically demanding day of the trip. On this day, we will take part in more intensive activities, such as visiting Loh Liang in Komodo National Park to search for and see the Komodo dragon directly in its natural habitat. After that, we will continue sailing for about 2 hours to Long Pink Beach to relax on the pink sandy beach. Then we will head to Padar Island, the iconic island and popular photo spot. This is a must-visit destination, even though you need to climb hundreds of steps to reach the viewpoint.
In the evening, to unwind after a long day, guests are usually invited to enjoy a small party on the boat.
Day 4
Relaxing Day at Majarinte and Kelor Island. Today is more relaxed compared to the previous days. We will visit Majarinte Island for snorkeling, followed by Kelor Island, where you can snorkel with baby sharks and spend around 2 to 3 hours before heading to the final stop in Labuan Bajo.
We will arrive in Labuan Bajo at around 2–3 PM.
Important:
Avoid all brokers offering cheap transportation or accommodation, as there is a risk of significant price mark-ups. It is better to book your transport and hotel through trusted applications or ask your guide for assistance in arranging them.
For your information, the Labuan Bajo area is very small. Wherever you stay, most places can be reached within a 10–15 minute walk. The airport is only about 10 minutes from the harbor by motor vehicle. Please make sure you do not get scammed.
This second option is the fastest and most convenient way to reach Komodo National Park, especially for those who do not enjoy long overland journeys or are prone to seasickness. By taking a flight from Lombok to Labuan Bajo, you can significantly reduce travel time and arrive feeling more refreshed and ready for your adventure.
One of the main advantages of flying to Labuan Bajo is the flexibility it offers. Unlike sailing directly from Lombok, which only provides a fixed 4 days 3 nights itinerary, departing from Labuan Bajo allows you to choose from a wider range of tour options based on your schedule, budget, and travel style. You have full freedom to select the type of experience that suits you best, from short daily trips to multi-day liveaboard adventures.
Here are the available options in Labuan Bajo:
This option is perfect for travelers with limited time. In one full day, you can visit 5–6 popular destinations within Komodo National Park, such as Padar Island, Komodo Island, Pink Beach, Taka Makassar, and Manta Point. It is a fast-paced but efficient way to explore the highlights.
This short overnight trip allows you to experience sailing on a traditional phinisi boat while visiting the main attractions at a more relaxed pace. It is ideal for travelers who want to enjoy the sunset, sunrise, and the peaceful atmosphere of staying overnight on the sea.
This is the most popular option in Labuan Bajo. It offers a more complete experience, combining trekking, snorkeling, island hopping, and relaxing time on board. With a longer duration, the itinerary is less rushed and more enjoyable.
You can also customize your trip by adding diving packages to explore some of the best dive sites in Komodo National Park. Komodo is internationally known for its rich marine biodiversity, strong currents, and vibrant coral reefs, making it one of the top diving destinations in the world. Whether you are a certified diver or a beginner, there are dive spots suitable for different levels of experience.
In summary, flying to Labuan Bajo gives you greater flexibility, more boat options (from standard to luxury), customizable itineraries, and the opportunity to tailor your Komodo adventure exactly the way you want it.
